Andrew McCutchen is 39 years old and an 18-year Major League veteran, and it seems Father Time may have finally caught him.
McCutchen – who was playing for the AAA Gwinnett Stripers in the Atlanta Braves organization – was released earlier this week. The former first-round draft pick is a five-time All-Star, won National League MVP in 2013 and was a consistent bright spot in some tough seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2009-17.
“Cutch,” has racked up 2,280 hits, 333 home runs and 1,157 RBI to go with 220 stolen bases, but in his 37 MLB games with the Texas Rangers this year was posting career-lows in batting average (.192), on-base percentage (.277) and slugging percentage (.260). Despite the bad numbers, they did come in a relatively small sample size and he was a serviceable bat for the Pirates in 135 games last season, so there is a chance a team takes a flier on him.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. At his peak, McCutchen was one of the best all-around players in baseball, winning four Silver Sluggers and a Gold Glove in 2012. With that being said, how many of the players since 2005 to win a Silver Slugger and Gold Glove in the same season can you name in eight minutes?
Good luck!
