On Wednesday, the Chicago Cubs announced the signing of former All-Star relief pitcher Liam Hendriks. Hendriks made 14 appearances in 2025 with the Boston Red Sox. The minor-league deal begins immediately, and he’ll report to camp in Arizona to ramp up.
The Cubs will go at Hendriks’ pace to get him ready for in-game action. When that time comes, he’ll likely be assigned to Triple-A Iowa to prepare for a possible return to the big leagues.
Hendriks began his career in 2011 with the Minnesota Twins. He’s most known for his time with the Chicago White Sox, where he made the All-Star team two of his three times. After the 2022 season, Hendriks was diagnosed with Stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was cancer-free by April and made a brief return to the White Sox before needing Tommy John surgery.
Manager Craig Counsell said the Chicago Cubs are “taking a shot” on Liam Hendriks because of his history of success in the league. Hendriks has a career 3.88 earned run average with 116 saves. His best years were in 2021 and 2022 with the White Sox when he recorded 38 and 37 saves.
The bullpen for the Cubs does not look like it did at the beginning of the year. Neither does the starting rotation. That’s because the Cubs’ pitching staff has been hit harder by the injury bug than any other team. Yet, still, they managed to patch the holes and continue leading a very competitive division.
The sustainability is starting to dwindle with recent losses to the Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves on the road. They won’t rush Hendriks, but they’ll anxiously await his arrival. Also, this is probably not the only move the Cubs will be forced to make.
