Happy 63rd birthday to five-time MLB All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger, 1994 All-Star Game MVP and 1995 World Series champion, Fred McGriff!
McGriff was a ninth-round draft selection by the New York Yankees in 1981, but he didn’t make his Big League debut until 1986 when he appeared in three games as a Toronto Blue Jay.
With his rookie status still intact in 1987, he hit 20 home runs before going on a streak of seven-straight 30-HR seasons. He led the American League with 36 dingers in 1989 before leading the National League with 35 in 1992 as a San Diego Padre.
McGriff was traded to the Atlanta Braves mid-1993, where he reached at least the NLCS in all but one of his 4+ seasons and won the World Series in 1995 against Cleveland. He departed Atlanta for Tampa Bay after 1997, spending time with the Rays, Cubs and Dodgers before hanging up his cleats in 2004. He retired with 493 home runs, 1,550 RBI and a .284 batting average to his name after a 19-year MLB career, earning himself a spot in the Pro Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2023.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. How many of the players to hit at least 400 home runs over the course of an MLB career can you name in seven minutes?
Good luck!
