Happy 71st birthday to 15-time MLB All-Star, 13-time Gold Glover, 1985 NLCS MVP and 1982 World Series Champion, Ozzie Smith!
Smith played in 19 Major League seasons, starting with the San Diego Padres before earning his reputation over his 15 years with the St. Louis Cardinals. Smith won a Gold Glove in each season from his final year in San Diego (1980) until 1992. Smith would play in four additional seasons, making three more appearances at the Midsummer Classic in those campaigns.
Smith hit just 28 regular season home runs in his career, but perhaps the most famous moment of his career was a walk-off blast against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the 1985 NLCS. It was accompanied by the famous call from broadcaster Jack Buck instructing Cardinals fans to “go crazy, folks!” Go Crazy!”
Despite his lack of power, Smith still retired from baseball with a career .262 batting average, 793 RBI and 2,460 hits to go with 580 stolen bases – which is still good for 22nd all-time.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. “The Wizard of Oz,” is one of 39 players in MLB history to steal at least 500 bases. How many of those players can you name in six minutes?
Good luck!
