The New York Mets are embroiled in a historically bad stretch on the diamond. They are only the second team in the last 30 years to have the league’s best record in June or later and then have a 2-13 stretch in the same season. New York joined the 2017 Los Angeles Dodgers on that unfortunate list.
The issue for the New York Mets has been their inability to hold onto leads. For example, New York coughed up a six-run lead against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. Will the New York Mets be able to get back on track sooner rather than later?

The Mets held a 5.5-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the National League East earlier this season. Now, they are five games back of the Phillies and only 0.5 games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds for the final NL wild card spot. First Baseman Pete Alonso had been one of the few New York Mets players holding their end of the bargain during this miserable stretch.
Right Fielder Juan Soto, after signing the most lucrative contract in MLB history , has been a massive disappointment. Even though he has been swinging the bat better lately, his inability to deliver in clutch moments has been maddening. He is hitting a measly .188 with RISP. When Owner Steve Cohen forked over a truckload of dough, he expected the star player to consistently deliver. Shortstop Francisco Lindor has also not played up to expectations in 2025. Even with the rough stretch, New York still has a 64.8% chance to make the playoffs according to FanGraphs.
New York returns to the diamond this evening when it welcomes the Seattle Mariners to town for a three-game set. A season that looked so promising for the New York Mets has taken a nosedive. They are running out of time to get back on track.
