One NL Central team is a perfect trade partner for Freddy Peralta, Mets

The Chicago Cubs have been the streakiest team in Major League Baseball this season.

They clearly have the talent to hold their own against anybody in the NL Central, but a recent 10-game skid might propel some major changes in the Windy City.

The Cubs are still in contention for the divisional pennant, and sitting on a 32-27 record (four games back of Milwaukee), they must make some moves to right the ship.

Notably, this team could use some hard-throwing help on the mound. That's why Sports Illustrated's Jason Petrucci believes they should be in the mix to trade for New York Mets star Freddy Peralta.

The Cubs could make a run at Freddy Peralta

“The Cubs’ surviving rotation heavily relies on soft-tossing finesse, desperately lacking Peralta’s signature 98 mph explosive velocity. Adding to the fit is the Craig Counsell factor, his former manager in Milwaukee. For a Mets front office looking to maximize a prospect return, targeting a desperate, asset-rich Cubs team is the perfect blueprint,” Petrucci wrote.

Peralta will be a free agent after this season, and with the Mets struggling to stay afloat, it's safe to assume he won't be in much of a rush to return to Queens.

The veteran hurler has been one of the few bright spots in Carlos Mendoza's team this season.

Per Baseball Reference, he's logged a 3-4 record with a 3.55 ERA and 1.303 WHIP, striking out 68 in 66.0 innings of work.

While those may not be his best numbers, he's a proven workhorse with at least 30 starts and 165 innings in three consecutive seasons, including a 17-6 record with a 2.70 ERA with the Brewers last season.

He's more than familiar with the division, and he'd obviously benefit from having some run support for a change.

The Cubs are still a contender, but they need more consistency on the mound, and Peralta might be among the three best options to bolster their rotation.
