Tigers Acquire Speedy Outfielder in Post-Deadline Move

The Detroit Tigers have added outfield depth by signing free-agent outfielder Michael Siani to a minor-league contract, with the 27-year-old assigned to Triple-A Toledo.

The move, reported on Friday, brings a known speed-and-defense specialist into the organization as the Tigers navigate injuries and roster needs down the stretch of the 2026 season.

Siani, a left-handed hitter from Glenside, Pennsylvania, was originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of William Penn Charter School.

He received a substantial $2 million signing bonus and steadily climbed through the minors, earning recognition for his elite center-field defense and baserunning.

He made his major-league debut with the Reds in September 2022. After limited time in Cincinnati, the St. Louis Cardinals claimed him off waivers in September 2023.

His most extensive big-league opportunity came in 2024 with St. Louis, where he appeared in 124 games and logged significant time in center field. That season he hit .228 with two home runs and 20 RBIs while showcasing the speed that has long defined his game, stealing 20 bases.

Defensively he stood out, posting strong metrics that underscored his value as a glove-first option capable of covering ground and making difficult plays.

In 2025, he saw limited action with the Cardinals before bouncing through several organizations via waivers, including stops with the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and most recently the Baltimore Orioles, who outrighted him to Triple-A earlier this summer.

Siani’s career major-league numbers remain modest offensively, with a .220 batting average across limited plate appearances, but clubs have consistently valued his athleticism, baserunning instincts, and ability to play a premium defensive position.

The Tigers, dealing with recent injuries in the outfield, gain a versatile depth piece who can contribute immediately at Toledo and potentially provide major-league help if called upon.

For Siani, the signing represents another chance to prove himself with a contending organization. At 27 and still possessing a minor-league option history that teams have found useful, he joins a Toledo roster that has already seen several players shuttle between the majors and Triple-A this season.

His speed on the basepaths and reliable defense in the outfield give the Mud Hens and Tigers a low-risk addition who could help stabilize the outfield picture as the year progresses.
