Tigers Announce Rotation Update Ahead of Rangers Series

The Detroit Tigers announced that right-hander Keider Montero will take the mound Saturday night against the Texas Rangers, slotting into the rotation for a traditional start.

Montero, 25, has been a valuable, if up-and-down, piece for Detroit this season.

After being called up and optioned multiple times, he was recently recalled on July 7 and delivered a strong performance: six innings, four hits, one run, and four strikeouts in a 5–1 win over Tampa Bay, improving him to 4–1 and showcasing a 3.31 ERA in his recent outings.

Across his time with the Tigers this year, Montero has primarily started but also flexed into bulk-relief roles, combining for roughly 65 innings, a 4.02 ERA, and 45 strikeouts . Manager A.J. Hinch has leaned on him during a cramped schedule. Montero even helped give the rotation extra rest back in April during a stretch of 23 games in 24 days.

With Montero getting the ball this weekend, Detroit continues to test the righty as a stabilizing arm in their mix, especially as they deal with injuries and workload management. His track record of bouncing between the majors and Triple-A, plus that strong Tampa Bay outing, suggests he’s ready to earn more consistent opportunities.

Montero slots in between Reese Olson on Friday night and Tarik Skubal on Sunday.

If he nails this start against Texas, it could be the first step toward solidifying a regular role. But the Tigers also have the flexibility to shuttle him back to Toledo if needed.

This is another opportunity to hold onto a rotation spot.
