The Detroit Tigers have a busy offseason ahead as they look to build a roster capable of making a deeper postseason run. Despite back-to-back playoff appearances, the team has failed to reach the ALCS in either year.
Still, Detroit found success during the regular season, and one of the biggest reasons was the addition of Gleyber Torres at the top of the lineup. The 28-year-old infielder signed a one-year, $15 million deal last offseason and exceeded expectations.
He posted a .256 batting average, .358 on-base percentage and .745 OPS, 16 home runs and 74 RBIs across 145 appearances. Torres also made noticeable strides defensively, which was a key factor in why the New York Yankees, his team for the first seven seasons of his career, chose not to offer him a contract.
Torres earned an All-Star selection with Detroit and fit in seamlessly, giving the Tigers a reliable presence on both sides of the ball. He is now entering free agency again, and while a long-term deal remains possible, the more immediate question is whether he will accept the qualifying offer which he was extended last Thursday. On Wednesday, the Tigers received word that Torres is seriously considering accepting the one-year $22 million deal.
MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported that Torres is “among the players who are most seriously considering the qualifying offer in the days ahead.” Morosi added that “a one-year deal makes a ton of sense,” citing Torres’ strong fit in the clubhouse and lineup, as well as his recent sports hernia surgery. He also noted that Detroit could still pair Torres with Javier Baez up the middle, though the presence of top infield prospect Kevin McGonigle could complicate a multi-year agreement.

Torres’ impact extended beyond the box score. He brought veteran experience to a young Tigers roster and was often praised by teammates for his leadership. His ability to hit in different spots in the order gave manager A.J. Hinch flexibility, especially during stretches when the lineup struggled with injuries.
If he returns, Detroit would retain a proven contributor who understands the expectations of a contending team and has shown he can thrive in high-leverage moments. That kind of presence is difficult to replace, especially for a club still trying to take the next step in October.
