The Detroit Tigers are still in the postseason conversation even after trading Tarik Skubal at the MLB trade deadline. They could realistically reach the postseason, as they have performed better than expected without Skubal, while the American League is weak overall. Detroit will need a complete team effort, however, and two important players are currently injured. So, when will outfielder Riley Greene and starting pitcher Jack Flaherty return from their injuries?
Greene is dealing with a right hamstring strain. According to MLB.com, he could return at the end of August or in early September. He recently completed a hitting, running and defensive progression.
As for Flaherty, the veteran pitcher is working to return from right flexor inflammation. MLB.com reports he may begin throwing off a mound over the weekend and could return in “possibly September.”
Greene, a three-time All-Star, has hit .273/.366/.450 across 117 games played during the 2026 season. He has become one of the better outfielders in baseball and the Tigers will certainly need him for the stretch run of the season.
Flaherty is a veteran right-hander with a proven track record, but he’s pitched to an underwhelming 4.59 ERA this year. Nevertheless, he would give the Tigers pitching a boost if he can return this season.
Updates on Riley Greene and Jack Flaherty’s injury statuses will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available. The Tigers, meanwhile, will begin a three-game series against the Royals in Kansas City on Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 8:10 PM ET.
