Twins Announce Roster Move Before Blowout Loss to A’s

Eventually, the Minnesota Twins may call upon 2022 second-round pick Tanner Schobel to save them.

That time is not now, though Schobel is one step closer to the majors. Schobel earned a promotion to Triple-A St. Paul, news that understandably may have been forgotten amid the big-league club's 14-3 loss to the lowly Athletics on Thursday afternoon.

Unfortunately for Schobel, he'd likely prefer to forget his Triple-A debut. The talented shortstop struck out three times and worked a walk in Wednesday's 7-5 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, the New York Yankees' Triple-A affiliate.

It's nonetheless a well-deserved promotion for Schobel, who hit .292 with seven homers, 29 RBI, and a .837 OPS over 234 Double-A plate appearances. Schobel posted an impressive 33-25 K-BB ratio and stole seven bases for the Wind Surge.

Don't be surprised to see Schobel crack the majors within the coming months, especially if he continues his improved plate discipline. Twins shortstop Carlos Correa is battling a back injury, and Schobel also played second and third base at Double-A this year.

The Wind Surge briefly experimented with Schobel manning left field last year. It is unclear if the Twins intend on revisiting using him in the outfield.

Before they think about where Schobel will play next, the Twins look to bounce back from a getaway day loss. Minnesota opens a three-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday evening.
