He's officially back in the major leagues.
Former No. 1 overall pick Royce Lewis, who was demoted to the minor leagues on May 19, has been recalled by the Minnesota Twins. The team designated outfielder James Outman for assignment to make room for Lewis on the roster.
Lewis slashed an abysmal .163/.261/.279 with a .540 OPS and three home runs in 31 games this season. As a result, the Twins optioned him to Triple-A St. Paul last month.
But now he is back after tearing it up at the plate in the minors. Lewis, who also played in two rehab games, hit .333/.403/.900 with 10 home runs and 22 RBI in 13 minor league games. For that, the Twins felt he had earned a promotion back to the majors.
The hope is that Lewis regained his confidence in the minors and worked on some mechanical changes with the Triple-A coaching staff. In addition to playing his usual third base, he also played first base and second base as well.
Lewis showed a ton of promise in his 58-game rookie season with the Twins back in 2023, where he slashed .309/.372/.548 with a .920 OPS, 15 homers and 52 RBI. However, he has not lived up to expectations since his rookie campaign.
The Twins selected Lewis with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft. They will hope that he can turnaround his season following a rough start offensively.
The Twins enter play on Saturday with a 30-35 record. They're six games back in the American League Central division. They've lost seven of their last 10 games overall.
