The Boston Red Sox continue to battle injuries in 2025, and two of their key players experienced rough rehab outings. Right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck and outfielder Wilyer Abreu both took the field as part of their return-to-play progress, but the results were far from encouraging.

Tanner Houck

Tanner Houck made his first rehab start after missing several weeks due to injury. Although he took the mound with high expectations, the outing didn’t go as planned. Houck lasted just one inning, giving up one earned run on two hits. He also issued a walk and failed to record a strikeout. While the appearance marked an important step in his recovery, the lack of command and dominance raises some concerns. Houck’s return is crucial for a Red Sox pitching staff that has been inconsistent throughout the season.

Wilyer Abreu

Meanwhile, Wilyer Abreu also made his first rehab appearance. The young outfielder went 0-for-2 at the plate, striking out twice but drawing a walk in his third plate appearance. Despite his strong potential and past performances, Abreu looked off-balance during his swings. However, drawing a walk does show he still has his eye for the strike zone, which could signal better outings ahead.

Tough outings

Although these performances weren’t ideal, it’s important to remember that rehab starts often come with rust. Players are adjusting to game speed, rebuilding timing and regaining confidence. Still, the Red Sox are eager to see quicker progress as they push to stay competitive in a tight AL East division.

Wrap up

Looking ahead, both Tanner Houck and Wilyer Abreu are expected to receive additional rehab assignments in the coming days. Their ability to bounce back will likely influence Boston’s plans as the trade deadline approaches. If either player returns to form, it could significantly boost the team’s depth and playoff hopes. Abreu is expected to return this weekend against the San Francisco Giants.

While the early results from these rehab outings are disappointing, there’s still time for both players to turn things around. Fans should continue to monitor updates closely, as the Red Sox remain focused on getting their roster back to full strength for the second half of the season.
