Tyler O’Neill extends his unbelievable Opening Day streak

Tyler O’Neill on Thursday extended what may be one of the most unlikely streaks in all of professional sports.

The Baltimore Orioles outfielder homered for a sixth consecutive Opening Day on Thursday. He hit a three-run shot against Blue Jays ace Jose Berrios in the third inning of Thursday’s opener in Toronto.

It should probably go without saying that this is an MLB record. O’Neill started the streak in 2020 with the St. Louis Cardinals, then did it again in 2021, 2022, and 2023. He moved to the Boston Red Sox in 2024, but continued the streak on his new team.

O’Neill’s streak had attracted significant attention even before he managed to extend it. The MLB Network Podcast even highlighted it on Wednesday, complete with a highlight reel of all five home runs up to that point.

The Orioles had a relatively quiet offseason, with O’Neill qualifying as one of their main additions. He hit 31 home runs for the Boston Red Sox last season and is well-known for his power, though injuries have been a lingering problem in recent years.

At this point, the Opening Day home run has become O’Neill’s unlikely calling card. This is not necessarily what the Orioles signed him for, but it’s a nice bonus.
