Unexpected Video of Astros Star Jose Altuve Is Trending

Longtime Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve could have a new home this season.

No, we’re not talking about a trade.

Astros reporter Brian McTaggart posted a video to X (formerly Twitter) of Altuve taking reps in left field. The eight-time All-Star has almost exclusively played second base in the majors, outside of one game at shortstop in 2016 and again in 2019.

Not that Altuve wants to talk about a possible position change.

“I’m trying not to make this a big deal or focus or something else,” Altuve told reporters.

“I want to get rid of this left-field conversation and try to answer every question possible and move on and start preparing for what we all care about, which is preparing for the season and winning,” he added, according to the Astros’ official website.

Houston initially discussed Altuve potentially moving to left field if Gold Glove third baseman Alex Bregman re-signed with the Astros. Bregman instead signed with the Boston Red Sox earlier this month.

Former Gold Glove winner Mauricio Dubón and top prospect Brice Matthews are expected to earn second base reps this spring.

Astros manager Joe Espada made it clear Altuve wouldn’t move to left field permanently.

“I want to get some feedback from him before we discuss where we’re going to go next,” Espada said Monday, “but he will play some second base.”

Astros fans shared mixed reactions when responding to McTaggart’s post.

“He’s pretty fast, so he will get to a lot of balls, but he won’t be scaling any fences to rob homers,” one X user joked of the 5-foot-6 Altuve.

“We are going to see half a season of bad routes,” another commenter remarked, “but if it means getting other infield hitters in the game, keep going Hosey.”

One poster criticized the Astros for experimenting with Altuve, a lifelong second baseman, in the outfield.

“The fact that they’re still having him do this despite Bregman leaving shows the roster mismanagement,” they wrote.

Another user shared their fear of other teams running on Altuve and taking the extra base.

“His arm is just a bit stronger than [Jake] Meyers who can’t do anything but throw rainbows back to the infield,” they wrote.
