Every elite baseball team has a star that takes it to the next level, and first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is doing that with the Toronto Blue Jays. The five-time All-Star is doing his part to get them their first championship since 1993, as he entered Sunday's matchup with the Seattle Mariners slashing .457/.524/.971 with five homers and 11 RBIs in nine postseason games.
However, the Blue Jays came into the matchup facing elimination, as they were down 3-2 to the Mariners in the AL Championship Series. They returned back to Toronto for Game 6 after playing three straight in Seattle, so their home fans would witness their season end if they lost.
Once again, Guerrero did his part to make sure that didn't happen. The 26-year-old hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Blue Jays a 5-0 lead and made franchise history in the process, via the team's social media.
Guerrero's home run was his sixth of the postseason, tying Jose Bautista and Joe Carter for the most career playoff homers (six) as a Blue Jay.
The 6-foot, 245-pounder played six playoff games before this season, but didn't homer in any of them. He also went a combined 3-for-22 with one RBI and two walks in those contests, so this red-hot playoff run is new ground for him.

Toronto signed Guerrero to a 14-year, $500 million contract extension in April, months before he was scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency per Spotrac. The two-time All-MLB First Teamer has been productive in the regular season his whole career, but his current playoff performance gives the Blue Jays the value they paid for.
Guerrero, who played his first big-league campaign in 2019, owns a .288/.366/.495 slash line with 183 homers and 591 RBIs over 975 career regular season games. Toronto signed the two-time Silver Slugger as an international free agent in 2015, and he's now one of the best success stories in franchise history.
The one thing that Guerrero was missing before 2025 was a memorable October campaign, and now he has that. It's no coincidence that the Blue Jays are in the AL Championship Series for the first time since 2016, which was also the last year they won a playoff game before this season.
Whether or not Toronto makes the World Series, fans can take solace in the fact that Guerrero is scheduled to be with the team for the rest of his career.
