The New York Yankees have acquired Ryan Weathers from the Miami Marlins, according to Jack Curry of YES.
Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has made his first major league move of the season.
New York has been rumored for a while to go after a starting pitcher, and they’ve finally pulled the trigger on one.
According to Brendan Kuty and Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, this doesn’t rule the Yankees out of making a bigger pitching splash.
This move came out of nowhere, as Weathers wasn’t one of the heavily rumored pitchers that New York was linked to. Cashman was working in silence.
Weathers comes with three years of control, is only 26 years old, and provides the Yankees with starting pitching depth. New York currently has Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt on the injured list to begin the season.
This is a pitcher that projects as a nice number four starter at this given moment, with room to grow.

Weathers also topped out at 99 miles per hour last season, had a 44.8% ground ball percentage, and finished off with a 3.99 ERA in 38.1 innings.
In his repertoire, Weathers has a four-seam fastball, changeup, sweeper, sinker, and slider. He had a 40.6% whiff rate on his changeup, 39.1% whiff rate on his sweeper, and 33.3% whiff rate on his slider.
Weathers’ changeup and sinker got hammered with a .286 batting average against, his fastball had a .260 batting average against, and his sweeper had a .174 batting average against.
A nice thing about Weathers is that he can easily slot into the bullpen whenever New York gets fully healthy and provides 96 miles per hour from the left side. Weathers had a 22.3% strikeout rate and a 28.8% whiff percentage this past season, but he also struggled with limiting damage contact.
Weathers is extremely injury-prone as he’s spent a combined 213 games on the injured list since 2024 with various injuries. In 2024, he missed 88 games due to an index finger injury on his pitching hand. In 2025, Weathers missed 41 games because of a forearm injury and then missed 84 games with a lat muscle strain in his pitching hand later in the season.
Weathers has also maxed out at 94.2 innings in his rookie season in 2021 with the San Diego Padres. In 2023, his second-most innings thrown were 86.2 innings with the Miami Marlins.
So this is worrisome if Weathers is the big starting pitcher acquisition for New York, as they already have their fare share of injuries already.
The full package that the Marlins are receiving back for Weathers is Dillon Lewis, Brendan Jones, Dylan Jasso, and Juan Matheus. Jones is their 15th-ranked prospect, Lewis is their 16th-ranked prospect, and Jasso is their 30th-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Matheus wasn’t ranked in their system.
Lewis is viewed as the prized possession here, as he is a 22-year-old outfielder who hit 22 home runs with a .766 OPS across 136 games in Low-A and High-A. Lewis was reportedly floated in a package for Edward Cabrera, and now Miami has both Owen Caissie and him.
Jones is someone who has been compared to Brett Gardner due to his similar swing and lack of power hitting. In 80 Double-A games, the 23-year-old outfielder hit .250 with a .780 OPS and 51 stolen bases.
Jasso is a 23-year-old first baseman who hit .257 with a .726 OPS and drove in 76 runs in 127 Double-A games.
Matheus is a 21-year-old shortstop who hit .275 with a .741 OPS and stole 40 bases across 123 Low and High-A games.
The Yankees are hoping to refine Weathers’ fastball, keep him healthy for as long as possible, and be dependable until their starting rotation is fully healthy. Pitching coach Matt Blake has a nice project here to tinker with.
The Marlins are getting two intriguing young outfielders in Lewis and Jones, who project to be at minimum fourth outfielders.
This seems like a solid trade for both sides, as New York needed another starting pitcher; they have to hope that they can somehow keep Weathers healthy. Miami is always looking for an outfielder and they just got two back, on top of a first baseman, and a lottery ticket shortstop.
With this acquisition, the Yankees’ opening day starting rotation most likely is Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil, Will Warren, and Weathers.
