What to Expect from Guardians Infielder Angel Genao

Another young infielder is heading to Cleveland. Angel Genao, the 22-year-old switch-hitter & one of the top prospects in the Guardians’ system, is reportedly moving up to the big leagues after what’s been a fantastic season at the plate.

A Look at Genao

During the 2023 season, Angel Genao held his own in Low-A as a 19-year-old middle infielder with Lynchburg of the Carolina League. He returned to the Hillcats to start 2024, a year that proved to be a real breakthrough for the now-22-year-old.

Between Low-A and High-A, Genao slashed .330/.379/.499 with 10 home runs, 52 extra-base hits, and 25 stolen bases. That season included a run in High-A Lake County, where he hit .322 over 66 contests. However, he wasn’t able to fully duplicate those results in Double-A last season.

He did post a sub-20% Whiff% in the Eastern League. But Genao slashed .259/.323/.359 with just two home runs and 23 extra-base hits over 77 contests.

This year has been a little bit different. Genao easily matched and exceeded his home run total from last year early, thanks to six home runs over the first two months. Between Double-A and Triple-A, Genao slashed .300/.401/.474 with 13 home runs and 34 extra-base hits across 96 games.

That .401 on-base percentage should be the first thing that catches your attention. Genao had a take rate above 57% in the International League since June 1, and a 25.8% Chase%. A good combination of discipline and working counts resulted in 60 walks overall for Genao, compared to 68 total strikeouts on the season.

Now, as far as the contact tool is concerned, it’s one of the best in the Minors. It was very difficult to get a fastball (13.5% Whiff%), or for that matter, any pitcher past him. There wasn’t a single part of the strike zone where he had a swing-and-miss rate above 16% this season with Columbus. Whether it be high or low, Genao was able to cover it.

Lastly, he can barrel up some balls, as he did so over 6% of the time over his final two months in Columbus before the promotion.

Defensively, Genao has experience at second, short, and third. Shortstop is his primary position, although the 22-year-old has seen significant time at third, too.

Per multiple reports, including the New York Times, the Guardians plan to promote Angel Genao on August 5. He’s already on the 40-man roster.

Analysis

One month ago, we rated Genao as the third-best prospect in the Guardians’ system, behind power-hitting first baseman Ralphy Velazquez & Cooper Ingle. But a month later, it’s likely now more of a toss-up for the top spot between Velazquez & Genao, the latter of whom does play a premium position in the field.

Genao becomes the latest notable prospect to move up from Columbus, as he joins Travis Bazzana, who could very well be his double-play partner in Cleveland. But it’s also important to note just how well of a fit Genao is for the Guardians.

A player like him fits the identity of the club. He’s one of those pain hitters, as far as pitchers are concerned, simply because he can cause chaos, either with his eye or bat. But unlike some of the other players on the Guardians, he doesn’t expand too much, which makes him somewhat of an interesting option to potentially be a future leadoff hitter if Bazzana isn’t that guy.

Plus, the defensive versatility helps, as well.
