Taken in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft, Cam Caminiti has blossomed into the unquestioned top pitching prospect in the Braves organization.
He turned in a stellar 3.09 ERA over 17 starts in his first professional season. And after some rocky outings to begin 2026, he’s found his groove, earning a promotion to Double-A Columbus a few weeks ago — where he’s pitching like someone who isn’t that far off from being considered for a major-league call-up.
Tuesday night’s outing was probably his best yet. In just his third start against Double-A competition, he faced a loaded Montgomery Biscuits lineup that’s posted a team OPS north of .800, headlined by Theo Gillen, who many rank as a top 10 prospect in all of baseball.
It was the biggest test for Caminiti to date, and he responded with six innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts — a gem from a southpaw who turned 20 less than two weeks ago.
The Braves have worked with him a lot this season. He’s expanded his repertoire to six or seven pitches after entering the pro ranks with just three, and they’ve also toyed with his mechanics in what’s been a critical season for his development. Those changes are largely why he hit some early season bumps in the road.
But with each passing start, he looks more comfortable — which is especially encouraging considering this is by far his most physically demanding season. Caminiti threw just 70.0 innings all of last year and is already up to 91.2 this season.
A call-up in 2026 is almost certainly out of the question, even if the Braves do have a desperate need for more pitching… and we’ve seen this organization do some pretty crazy things with their top prospects in recent years. However, if things continue to trend in this direction over the next 10-12 months, it’s not unreasonable to believe we could see Cam Caminiti toe the rubber in Atlanta sometime next year — right around his 21st birthday.
Of course, it wouldn’t be concerning if it took longer than that. The Braves have been a little too reliant on their talented prospect arms in recent years, so perhaps we see them try to avoid that with some acquisitions in the offseason. That would be a nice change of pace, and it’s also important to remember that prospect development is never linear.
Some arms struggle for years in the minors, but when it all clicks, they’re ready for immediate success at the major-league level. Other prospects dominate at every level, yet it takes them a few tries in the majors before they’re finally ready to take the keys. Cam Caminiti has all the tools for success, but the path for every prospect is different.
