White Sox acquire bullpen help from Mets

The Chicago White Sox and general manager Chris Getz needed to address the pitching staff heading into the MLB Trade Deadline, and they've done just that. After acquiring right-hander Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners on Saturday to address the starting rotation, Getz made another shrewd maneuver early Monday morning to acquire backend bullpen help. 

The White Sox acquire bullpen help to replace Seranthony Domínguez

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the White Sox are acquiring right-hander Huascar Brazoban from the New York Mets. Going back in exchange for Brazoban, the Mets will receive Double-A right-hander Gabe Davis (0-5 with a 5.81 ERA in 18 games with High-A Winston-Salem and Double-A Birmingham) and Triple-A right-hander Zach Franklin (a 4.37 ERA and five saves over 33 appearances at Triple-A Charlotte). 

Brazoban, a 36-year-old from the Dominican Republic, has been one of the best relievers in baseball this season, posting a 5-2 record with a 2.56 ERA, eight holds and a .166 batting average against in 52 2/3 innings. Brazoban will likely be manager Will Venable's middle-to-late-inning reliever to replace Seranthony Domínguez, who was included in the deal to acquire Castillo.

Brazoban has been effective in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings this season, with the ninth proving to be a bear for him to tackle.

Sixth inning: 17 games with a 1.54 ERA, 10 strikeouts, a .128 batting average against and a 0.86 WHIP 

Seventh inning: 19 games with a 1.76 ERA, 15 strikeouts, a .157 BAA and a 0.85 WHIP

Eighth inning: six games with a 1.69 ERA, eight strikeouts, a .059 BAA and a 0.56 WHIP

Ninth inning: four games with a 16.88 ERA, one strikeout, a .333 BAA and a 1.88 WHIP. 

The White Sox still need to find a closer

Brazoban will certainly upgrade the bullpen and add to what the White Sox already have. Right-hander Grant Taylor (24) has emerged as one of the better relievers on the team (2.40 ERA in 41 games and four starts) and has gotten the opportunity to close (five saves in eight opportunities). 

However, given Brazoban's struggles in the ninth inning and Taylor not having the experience as Dominguez did -- Dominguez was the team leader in saves (12) and has 52 in his career -- the White Sox could still add a closer. Retaining their top prospects and showing the willingness to take on money -- the White Sox are taking on Castillo's entire contract -- Getz could still make a play for a dominant closer.

Someone like Detroit Tigers closer Kenley Jansen would make sense for the White Sox to add, as he would add experience to a relatively inexperienced bullpen.
