White Sox Acquire RHP José Urquidy from Pirates

Urquidy, 31, was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Friday. He was 5-4 with a 3.66 ERA and 73 strikeouts over 17 starts with Triple-A Indianapolis this season. He also made five relief appearances with Pittsburgh earlier in the year, going 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA in 6.1 innings.

The right-hander previously pitched for the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers. He was a member of the Astros’ 2022 World Series championship team and has a career MLB record of 27-16 with a 3.99 ERA.

In return, the Pirates receive Félix Doroteo, a 21-year-old right-hander who has pitched in the Arizona Complex League this season. Doroteo posted a 4.50 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 18 innings.

While it won’t be defined as an earth-shattering move, Urquidy adds some experienced pitching depth to a White Sox club currently sitting in first place in the American League Central. He is expected to report to Triple-A Charlotte once the move is finalized.
