White Sox Drop Third Straight Despite Late Rally in Loss to Mets

The Chicago White Sox comeback bid fell short Tuesday night in a 6-4 loss to the New York Mets in Queens, marking the team’s third straight defeat. Jonathan Cannon recovered after a rocky first inning, but the Pale Hose couldn’t dig out of the early hole.

Before the vibes went sideways, the game actually started with some hope, and we’ve seen how that goes. Miguel Vargas crushed his eighth homer of the season in the first to put the Sox up 2-0, continuing his impressive run.

But like clockwork, that lead evaporated in mere moments, as Cannon struggled to find his footing.

Mets Go Boom Early, Sox Go Silent

With two outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the first, Pete Alonso tied things up with a two-run homer. After a Brett Baty single, Jared Young followed with the Mets’ second two-run shot of the inning, making it 4-2 before some fans even found their seats.

Young would double and score on a Jeff McNeil sacrifice fly in the third.

Cannon then allowed back-to-back singles and hit a batter before finally retiring Francisco Lindor, who had led off the inning, to stop the bleeding.

Cannon ultimately lasted five innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Given how the first inning went, it honestly could’ve been worse.

Close Calls, Missed Chances

The White Sox had their chances. In the sixth inning, they loaded the bases with two outs, but Lenyn Sosa grounded out to end the threat. After the first inning homer from Vargas, the Sox managed just four hits through six.

They scratched back in the seventh thanks to a fielder’s choice and a Francisco Álvarez passed ball that allowed Chase Meidroth to score. Vargas nearly tied the game with another deep shot but settled for a double off the top of the wall to cut the deficit to one.

But the Mets tacked on an insurance run in the eighth off reliever Jared Shuster, thanks to three straight singles by McNeil, Álvarez, and Lindor.

The Sox brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after Austin Slater reached on an infield single, but the rally fizzled as quickly as it sparked.
