White Sox Finalize 2025 Opening Day Roster, Face 40-Man Roster Decisions

The Chicago White Sox have set their 2025 Opening Day roster, according to Scott Merkin of MLB.com, with several notable non-roster invitees making the 26-man squad.

Infielder Nick Maton and outfielder Travis Jankowski have earned spots on the team, along with infielder Brooks Baldwin. However, Maton and Jankowski are not currently on the 40-man roster, meaning the White Sox must clear two spots to add them. Pitcher Mike Clevinger, another non-roster invitee, has also made the Opening Day roster, requiring a third 40-man move.

Maton, Jankowski Add Depth

The 28-year-old Maton signed a minor league deal with Chicago in December and impressed during spring training, slashing .289/.357/.632 over 43 Cactus League plate appearances. A versatile defender, he can play multiple infield positions and the outfield. He will see opportunities alongside Baldwin, Lenyn Sosa, and Jacob Amaya. Notably, Maton is out of minor league options, meaning he would need to clear waivers before being sent down.

A veteran outfielder, Jankowski reunites with White Sox manager Will Venable, who previously coached him with the Texas Rangers. With outfielder Mike Tauchman beginning the season on the injured list (hamstring strain), Jankowski will join Luis Robert Jr., Michael A. Taylor, and Austin Slater in the outfield mix. Andrew Benintendi is expected to serve as the team’s primary designated hitter.

White Sox Shuffle 40-Man Roster

Earlier today, the White Sox designated outfielder Oscar Colás. Once a top-100 prospect, Colás struggled to meet expectations during multiple stints with the team. In a corresponding move, Chicago claimed outfielder Greg Jones from the Colorado Rockies to fill Colás’ roster spot.

Additionally, right-handed pitcher Justin Anderson was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte, while five other players were reassigned to minor league camp:

  • Infielders: Bobby Dalbec, Tristan Gray, Chase Meidroth
  • Pitchers: James Karinchak, Steven Wilson

What's On Tap Next?

While the White Sox have not yet made an official announcement, their Opening Day roster is essentially set. The team must still make three 40-man roster moves to accommodate Clevinger, Maton, and Jankowski. One of those moves is likely moving right-hander Drew Thorpe to the 60-day injured list. Thorpe will miss the entire season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

The White Sox open their 2025 season on Thursday, hosting the Los Angeles Angels at Guaranteed Rate Field.
