White Sox Trim Roster as Spring Training Struggles Continue

The Chicago White Sox are off to a sluggish start in spring training, sitting at 3-9 after splitting a pair of games against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. As the team prepared to face the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, the roster was reduced by five players, marking the first of many cuts ahead of Opening Day.

Among the first to be reassigned were left-handed pitcher Jake Eder and right-hander Jairo Iriarte, both optioned to Triple-A Charlotte. Right-handed pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez, one of the players acquired in the Garrett Crochet trade, was sent to Double-A Birmingham.

Most notably, left-handers Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith—the top two left-handed pitching prospects in baseball—were reassigned to minor league camp.

None of these moves are surprising, as all five players need further development before reaching the major leagues.

Eder and Iriarte both made their MLB debuts last season but were not expected to break camp with the club. Schultz and Smith could make their way to Chicago at some point in 2025, though Smith, in particular, remains a long shot, given that he has just seven minor league innings under his belt.

Gonzalez could move quickly depending on the White Sox’s bullpen needs, while Eder and Iriarte are likely to see time in Chicago at some point this season.

Following these moves, the White Sox now have 66 players remaining in camp, including 31 pitchers, six catchers, 18 infielders, and 11 outfielders.
