The Cleveland Guardians didn’t sit on the sidelines as MLB’s Rule 5 Draft took place on Wednesday afternoon. They entered the day with an open spot on the 40-man roster and used that to select Deyvison De Los Santos, who was left unprotected by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Here’s everything you need to know about the newest member of the Guardians’ farm system.
The Diamondbacks originally signed De Los Santos out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in July of 2019. He’s spent his entire minor league career in Arizona’s organization and was their fifth-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline before being selected by Cleveland.
De Los Santos is officially listed as a third baseman but has demonstrated a little bit of diversity throughout his Minor League career. He’s played a total of 68 games at first base, compared to the 218 games he’s played at third.
The most exciting part of the 20-year-old’s skillset is his potential power and offensive production at the plate.
De Los Santos has created a solid Minor League campaign over the last few seasons. His 2023 season with the Amarillo Sod Poodles (Arizona’s Double-A affiliate) was especially impressive. He slashed .245/.297/.431 with a .728 OPS while totaling 20 home runs and 61 RBI.
Will De Los Santos make an appearance for the Guardians next season?
Yes. (Unless there is a situation in which he is traded.)
As stated by MiLB's Rule 5 draft regulations,
"The receiving team must then keep the player on the Major League 25-man roster for the entirety of the next season, and the selected player must remain active (not on the disabled list) for a minimum of 90 days. If the player does not remain on the Major League roster, he is offered back to the team he was selected from for $25,000. If his original team declines, the receiving team may waive the player."
So, De Los Santos will be in the mix next season. The Guardians still needs to figure out their infield of Gabriel Arias, Brayan Rocchio, and Tyler Freeman which is where the possibility of Deyvison playing first comes into play.
Sure, fans will point to De Los Santos being another young infielder who now enters Cleveland’s log jam at the position. However, his potential alone made it hard for the Guardians to pass up. Acquiring as much talent as possible is what they need to do, and figuring out where it all fits is a problem they can address down the line.
