Why the Blue Jays should consider pursuing Lane Thomas

If the Toronto Blue Jays want to make a postseason push, they need to add a right-handed power bat to salvage an inconsistent offensive lineup.

They should consider acquiring Lane Thomas from the Kansas City Royals ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline. The 30-year-old would provide the Blue Jays with a solid right-handed offensive spark with an extensive track record of punishing left-handed pitching.

On top of their need for a power bat, their trade-deadline goals should also include acquiring pitching depth. But pursuing a reliable right-handed bat is precisely what the Blue Jays need to stabilize the lineup, especially when facing dominant left-handers.

Thomas' first home run this season on April 26 came as a dramatic three-run walk-off blast in the 10th inning to power the Royals to an 11-9 comeback victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

With a Blue Jays team hustling to remain contenders, Thomas has the opportunity to excel and provide a productive platoon bat in a new environment, as a low cost high-leverage platoon specialist who is a pending free agent.

Why Lane Thomas is a suitable fit for the Blue Jays

Thomas possesses elite dominance against southpaws boasting with a career .290 batting average, 26 home runs, 90 RBI and an .855 OPS across 751 plate appearances. This season against lefties, he is batting .259 with a home run and eight RBI.

His plate discipline is also a strength as he holds a stellar 16.8% walk rate and chase rate of 21.5%. He's also an impactful baserunner, with his impressive sprint speed of 28.9 feet/second sitting in the 91st percentile.

Historically, Thomas has given left-handed pitchers an incredibly difficult time, with a career .853 OPS against them. As well, his right-handed power would offer the Blue Jays a reliable middle-of-the-order bat to mend the team's lingering platoon concerns.

Supplementary to his offensive upside, he also provides steady defensive versatility playing all three outfield positions with an elite arm strength ranking in the 91st percentile at 90.6 mph. Overall, he grades out as an above-average outfielder.

The Cincinnati Reds had prior interest in him as well as the Cleveland Guardians, who also acquired Thomas in a trade with the Washington Nationals on July 29, 2024. Overall, Thomas has drawn significant interest in past deadlines, making him a suitable option for the Blue Jays to explore this season.
