Xander Bogaerts Accomplishes Unique Padres Feat Against Rockies

Xander Bogaerts made San Diego Padres history Thursday while nearly completing a cycle against the Colorado Rockies.

Bogaerts became the first player in Padres history to hit a home run and a triple in the same inning during San Diego’s seven-run second inning. His power display helped the Padres cruise to a 9-2 win at Coors Field.

The shortstop opened the second inning with a solo home run against Rockies starter Tanner Gordon. Later in the same inning, Bogaerts came back to the plate and lined a two-run triple against Zach Agnos.

Bogaerts added another extra-base hit in the fourth inning, hitting a ground-rule double. That left him needing only a single to complete the cycle, but he struck out in his next two at-bats.

Even without the cycle, Bogaerts finished with three extra-base hits and three RBI as San Diego won three of four games in Colorado.

The performance also provided a boost during an important stretch for the veteran. Bogaerts has dealt with injuries this season, including a hamstring strain in August, but returned to remain part of San Diego’s infield.

Entering Thursday, Bogaerts was batting .226 with 12 home runs, 56 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 146 games. His latest performance pushed his home run total to 13 and gave him another memorable moment in a Padres uniform.

San Diego improved to 84-69 with the victory and continued its strong September run. The Padres entered Thursday having won 10 of their previous 11 games while holding the third National League Wild Card position.

The win also created more separation from the Arizona Diamondbacks, who entered the day four games behind San Diego for the final Wild Card spot.

Bogaerts’ historic second inning ultimately became part of another important Padres victory. With the regular season entering its final stretch, San Diego continues to get meaningful contributions from its veteran shortstop.
