Less than three months ago, New York Yankees fans seemingly wrote off any chance they’d see Giancarlo Stanton at the plate this year.
Stanton has no time for doubters, especially not as he inches closer to 500 home runs.
Stanton, who has been out since February with tennis elbow in both arms, took live at-bats at Yankee Stadium before Tuesday’s 12-3 victory over the San Diego Padres. The five-time All-Star grounded out to shortstop and drew a walk against rehabbing reliever Jake Cousins.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that he isn’t ruling out Stanton coming off the 60-day injured list later this month.
“I don’t know what exactly his rehab assignment will look like,” Boone admitted.
“[His situation might] be a little different than everyone else’s because we don’t need the field component,” Boone added, according to the New York Post.
It is unclear what the Yankees will do with surging second-year slugger Ben Rice upon Stanton’s eventual return. Rice enters play Wednesday hitting .264 with eight home runs, 15 RBI, eight doubles, and a .935 OPS as the full-time DH.
Stanton is no stranger to the injured list, especially not in his eight Yankees seasons. The former Silver Slugger has played over 120 games only once since 2019, and he missed time the last two years with hamstring injuries.
Although Stanton battled tennis elbow last fall, he nonetheless earned ALCS MVP and smashed seven home runs in 14 playoff games.
Stanton, who turns 36 in November, owns 429 home runs since debuting in 2010. If Stanton stays healthy after rejoining the Yankees, he could potentially become only the 41st player to hit at least 450 homers.
