New York Yankees pitcher Cade Winquest has been Designated for Assignment by the team. Winquest had previously made the 40-man roster after Spring Training but did not play a single game for the team.
The right-hand pitcher had been selected by the Yankees in the 2025 Rule 5 draft from the St. Louis Cardinals. The last time the Yankees had named a player selected by the Rule 5 draft into the starting roster was back in 2011.
Winquest visibly struggled during Spring Training, posting a 6.48 ERA in 8.1 innings played. Despite the worrying numbers, the Yankees still opted to add him into the roster to begin the 2026 MLB season.
Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
— New York Yankees (@Yankees) April 10, 2026
• Recalled RHP Luis Gil (#81) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
• Designated RHP Cade Winquest for assignment.
Winquest suited up for all 12 Yankee games to begin the season but never threw a single pitch for the team. After the Yankees fell to the Athletics for a second straight game, the decision was made for Winquest to be DFA'd.
Shortly after the Winquest move, the Yankees would announce that right-hand pitcher Luis Gil, who had been rehabbing for the Triple-A side, was recalled to the Yankees roster to rejoin the starting rotation.
Winquest was selected by the Cardinals in the eighth round of the 2022 MLB draft. He played the next few seasons in the minor league, including a 2024 season that saw his time cut short on the team due to a slipped disc in his back.
In 2025, Winquest began the season playing for the High-A Peoria Chiefs. During the season, Winquest would be promoted to the Double-A Springfield Cardinals.
After years of playing in the minor league, Winquest would finally receive the opportunity of a lifetime after being selected by the Yankees. The decision to have him be in the starting roster over Gil was a surprising move, as many weren't sure if Winquest was actually ready to pitch in the MLB.
The sentiment was clearly shared by the Yankees, who believed that Winquest was not ready to pitch in the majors just yet. With Winquest out of the roster, the Yankees selecting Gil back into the roster further proves that there is no shortage of experienced pitcher options.
Winquest will now have to wait until the decision is made for him to either continue pitching in the minor league or find a new team to play for. The right-hand pitcher is still young, and at 24 years old, he could be a great pickup for any team in need of a pitcher.
