It was a disappointing trade deadline for the New York Yankees. The team did not add any major players, making just three moves overall. This has led to frustration with GM Brian Cashman among Yankees fans.

While Yankees fans may be upset with the lack of movement from the team, they can be excited about the debut of their top prospect, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

George Lombard Jr. is getting his call to the show. Lombard was the 26th overall selection of the Yankees in the 2023 MLB Draft. He began his season with the Double-A Somerset Patriots before moving up to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He hit .268 at Triple-A with a .405 on base percetnage. He also had six home runs, 21 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. The team has long considered him major league ready defensively, but was waiting for the bat to catch up.

The Yankees sent Anthony Volpe to Triple-A to open the roster spot. Meanwhile, Jasson Dominguez was also sent to Triple-A to make room for Heliot Ramos and keep another high-ranking prospect, Spencer Jones, on the MLB roster.

Lombard is expected to play short for the Yanks, but Cashman did admit they looked into shortstops at the trade deadline.

“We engaged everybody,” Cashman said. “We tried to evaluate all opportunities in the marketplace. And, with that being said, I don’t think there were a lot of opportunities that existed that were upgrades for us. We like the players we have and we like the players we have on the come.”

The Yankees’ offense has struggled recently, and the team hopes that Lombard can inject some life into it. He will make his MLB debut on Tuesday night, at home against the St. Louis Cardinals.
