Yankees Get Disastrous Luke Weaver News After Unexpected Injury

The New York Yankees received the verdict on the Luke Weaver hamstring injury on Monday night, June 2, and it was not good news.

Weaver was preparing to close out Sunday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers before he injured his hamstring stretching , according to manager Aaron Boone.

The unexpected issue was enough for Boone to sit Weaver down and call upon reliever Tim Hill to pitch the ninth instead. Now, the reason for that caution is clear.

On the evening of June 2, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan relayed the following injury update on X.

"New York Yankees closer Luke Weaver is expected be placed on the injured list after injuring his hamstring warming up Sunday night, sources tell ESPN," Passan reported. "Weaver underwent an MRI and could miss four to six weeks, though the official timetable will be determined Tuesday."

Needless to say, this is a disastrous turn of events for the Yankees, considering Weaver simply injured himself while stretching.

The Yankees are expected to get veteran reliever Fernando Cruz back according to New York Post insider Joel Sherman, although the official roster move has yet to be announced. But Weaver may be the one arm in the NYY bullpen that is irreplaceable.

Through 24 appearances this season, Weaver has pitched to an outstanding 1.05 ERA and 0.701 WHIP. He has recorded 8 saves and has also closed out a total of 13 games, while only allowing 3 earned runs in the process.

Assuming this report is accurate, the Yankees will have a decision to make at closer, which could involve reinstating big-name closer acquisition Devin Williams following his early-season struggles.
