The New York Yankees continue to wait for the recovery of former star prospect Anthony Volpe.
The young shortstop is reportedly in the final stage of his recovery from shoulder surgery. He hasn't experienced any setbacks during his rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Despite failing to live up to the expectations on offense, the 24-year-old should be right back in the starting lineup as soon as he's healthy.
According to MLB insider Bryan Hoch, that's going to be quite soon, as he could be back in The Show next weekend.
“Anthony Volpe’s MLB return could occur during the upcoming homestand against the Orioles and Rangers, beginning Friday,” Hoch shared on X.
Notably, this will put manager Aaron Boone in a bit of a predicament. Jose Caballero has been solid in Volpe's absence, slashing .273/.321/.414 with 27 hits, 12 runs scored, 11 RBI, 11 stolen bases and three home runs in 28 games.
Volpe is coming off a down year and, while he's a former Gold Glove winner, he's fallen significantly short of expectations at the plate.
Granted, some of that might also be due to the lingering injury he suffered in May before finally going under the knife in October.
Boone and the Yankees have always been supportive of a young man who was called to carry Derek Jeter's torch at shortstop, so they will probably continue to give him as many opportunities as he needs to get it together.
That said, it's been a while since the Yankees went all the way, and with an AL-best 19-10 record, they can't afford to have Volpe hold them back if he's not sharp at the plate when he returns.
