Yankees Intensify Search for Rotation Reinforcements

With Gerrit Cole sidelined for the season due to Tommy John surgery, the New York Yankees are navigating a precarious pitching landscape. Veteran Carlos Carrasco and rookie Will Warren have stepped into the rotation, but their performances underscore the team's need for additional depth.

Carrasco, 38, has posted a 2–2 record with a 5.90 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP over his first six starts. While his experience is invaluable, his current numbers suggest he's more of a stopgap than a long-term solution.

Warren, 25, has shown promise but also inconsistency. In a recent outing against the Orioles, he allowed four runs in just over three innings, raising his ERA to 5.63 for the season.

Despite strong performances from Max Fried, recently from Carlos Rodón, and encouraging signs from Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil, the Yankees' rotation lacks the depth required for a deep postseason run. As Pete Caldera of the USA Today Network notes, the team is expected to seek rotation reinforcements before the July 31 trade deadline.

Potential Trade Targets:

  1. Andrew Heaney (Pittsburgh Pirates): The 34-year-old left-hander has been stellar this season, boasting a 1.72 ERA and an NL-best 0.766 WHIP over five starts. His control and effectiveness make him an attractive option. However, it's worth noting that Heaney's previous stint with the Yankees in 2021 was less than successful, as he posted a 7.32 ERA over 12 appearances, allowing 13 home runs in 35.2 innings.
  2. Sandy Alcántara (Miami Marlins): The 2022 NL Cy Young winner is a long shot due to high demand and the Yankees' limited trade assets. He is off to a rough start this season, but his elite talent could be worth the investment if the opportunity arises.
  3. Dylan Cease (San Diego Padres): Despite a slow start in 2025, Cease has been on the Yankees' radar. His high strikeout potential and previous success could provide a significant boost to the rotation.
  4. Michael King (San Diego Padres): King, 29, has emerged as a co-ace for the Padres, posting a 13–9 record with a 2.95 ERA and 201 strikeouts in 30 starts during the 2024 season. While the Padres have indicated a reluctance to trade him, the Yankees' need for a reliable starter could prompt them to explore a reunion.

As the trade deadline approaches, the Yankees' front office faces critical decisions. Bolstering the rotation is imperative to sustain their postseason aspirations.
