The New York Yankees could not complete the sweep of the Houston Astros, losing 7-4 to the Astros on Sunday. Luis Gil did not pitch well, giving up six runs in four innings, leading to Gil being demoted right after the game.
Now, the Yankees have decided who to bring up from the minors in place of Gil, according to Jorge Castillo of ESPN.
Jasson Dominguez will be replacing Gil on the major league roster. Dominguez spent the 2025 season with the major league club, playing in 123 games and hitting .257 with ten home runs and 47 RBIs. Still, he was sent to Triple-A to begin this season after spring training. He has hit .326 with three home runs and eight steals at the Triple-A level in 2026.
Dominguez could be used as a designated hitter, depending on the severity of the injury to Giancarlo Stanton. If Stanton is not able to play or lands on the IL, Dominguez will be the likely replacement.
Meanwhile, Gil has been dreadful this year. He made four starts this year, with a 1-2 record and a 6.05 ERA. He has pitched more than five innings just once this year, and it was also the only start in which he did not give up three or more runs. The Yankees’ schedule will allow them to run with a four-man rotation into the early part of May.
Max Fried is scheduled to go to the mound on Monday, as the Yankees open a three-game set against the Texas Rangers. He would then pitch again on May 2, giving him full rest. The Yankees will need a fifth starter for May 5, back at home against the Rangers.
