The New York Yankees opened their weekend series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night with a 3-1 victory at Yankee Stadium.

Spencer Jones provided much of the offensive spark, finishing with a home run and two RBIs in the win. The performance came as the young outfielder continues to carve out a larger role in the lineup during his rookie campaign.

Before the first pitch, Yankees legend and YES Network analyst Paul O’Neill offered his thoughts on Jones’ recent progress.

Meredith Marakovits asked O’Neill about the 25-year-old: “I have to ask you about Spencer Jones , another young kid… The other day, he had the opposite field home run, three hits. He talked about adjustments that he was told to make and was able to implement them pretty much immediately. What does that tell you about a young kid when he’s able to do that?”

O’Neill replied: “Well, he’s getting some time now and half of his home runs have been the other way. So he’s not a dead pull hitter. He’s got so much power. If you watch what happened, guys are throwing him up in the strike zone. That is the ball that he’s going to have to work to stay away from. I mean, when he gets the ball down, he can do a lot of things with his power. But if he starts to leave the strike zone, especially up with his swing and his height, that’s going to be tough to catch up to.”

The comments highlighted both the promise and the areas still needing refinement for the tall left-handed hitter.

Jones was selected by the Yankees in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft after starring at Vanderbilt University. He reached the major leagues earlier this season and has steadily earned more opportunities as the summer has progressed.

Through 55 games, Jones is batting .229 with 35 hits, seven home runs, 21 RBIs, 18 runs scored and seven stolen bases.

His ability to drive the ball to the opposite field has drawn particular notice, as O’Neill pointed out that roughly half of his home runs have gone that direction.

The Yankees improved to 73-55 with the victory and remain in second place in the American League East. They have played well of late, going 7-3 over their last 10 games.

At home, the club sits at 32-27 through 59 contests in the Bronx this season.

After completing the series with the Blue Jays, the Yankees will stay home to face the Houston Astros beginning Tuesday night.

Jones’ growing presence in the outfield has given the team another option as it navigates the final stretch of the regular season. His combination of power and speed continues to make him a player worth watching as the Yankees push for a strong finish.
