After back-to-back early exits, Jazz Chisholm Jr. is now out of the Yankees lineup altogether.
Chisholm is not in Thursday’s starting lineup against the Royals, raising fresh concerns about his availability after the infielder left consecutive games this week with separate injuries.
The Yankees had initially downplayed the severity of his left groin tightness, which forced him out of Wednesday’s game after just five innings. Manager Aaron Boone told reporters postgame that strength tests had “come back good” and expressed optimism that Chisholm would be fine.
Chisholm told Greg Joyce of the NY Post that he feels like he avoided a bigger issue by coming out on Wednesday night. He said he could be available off the bench.
Chisholm also exited Tuesday night’s game after appearing to tweak his neck diving into third base. Though he returned to the lineup Wednesday, he didn’t last long, going 0-for-1 with two walks before being replaced defensively by Oswald Peraza.
Tuesday night's injury also came right after a collision with Ryals third baseman Maikel Garcia, who Chisholm had words with. He reportedly told third base coach Luis Rojas he would slap Garcia, in much more colorful words. The two had a stare down at third before he exited Wednesday night.
Chisholm returned less than two weeks ago from a month-long absence due to an oblique injury.
Through 38 games, he’s slashing a .215/.316/.454 line, hitting nine home runs and driving in 24 runs, with an OPS of .770.
As of Thursday afternoon, the Yankees have not provided a timeline for his return or confirmed whether additional testing is planned.
