Yankees make Ryan Weathers decision after Saturday's exit

The New York Yankees have been unable to get fully healthy at any point this season. Just when they start to get close, another injury happens and prolongs the process.

It happened again on Saturday when left-hander Ryan Weathers left his start in the fourth inning due to an apparent injury. The extent of Weathers injury has now been revealed, and it will test the depth of an injured New York starting rotation.

Ryan Weathers is hitting the injured list

After undergoing further imaging, the Yankees announced Sunday that Weathers was being placed on the 15-day injured list with a left forearm flexor strain.

According to manager Aaron Boone, Weathers will be shut down from throwing for 2-4 weeks. Boone also said that there's a "great chance" Weathers returns at some capacity this season.

Ryan Weathers had been one of the best pitchers in the second half

Weathers has made seven starts since the All-Star Break and has been among the best pitchers in the league during that stretch. He's allowed multiple runs just two times and has lowered his season ERA from 4.40 to 3.60 during that span.

A rejuvenation of pitch-mix and pitch-usage led to the second half success and Weathers was becoming an important piece of the Yankees rotation.

Who takes the spot in the rotation?

Weathers is the second pitcher in the rotation to hit the injured list within the past week, joining left-hander Max Fried. That now leaves an open spot in the Yankees rotation that will need to be filled until Fried returns.

New York could opt for a bullpen game when that spot in the rotation comes around, or someone could be promoted from the minor leagues. Whatever the decision is, Weathers getting back to full strength will be important for the Yankees postseason success.
