It's one thing to have a bad bullpen night, but the New York Yankees' relievers could sink the team's ship. The Yankees entered Wednesday's bout with the Detroit Tigers with a bullpen ERA north of 5.00 since the All-Star break, via The Athletic's Chris Kirschner.
New York starting pitchers Will Warren and Carlos Rodón each allowed two runs over six innings against the Tigers on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. However, the bullpen crumbled in each contest, continuing its struggles.
Fernando Cruz and Mark Leiter Jr. allowed a combined nine runs without recording an out in the seventh inning on Tuesday before Leiter, Camilo Doval, Tim Hill, and Luke Weaver coughed up nine runs over 2.1 frames on Wednesday. The Yankees lost the first game 12-2 and the second 11-1.
Furthermore, their bullpen made franchise history with its blunders, via Stathead's Katie Sharp.
"This is the 1st time in franchise history that the Yankees bullpen allowed 9+ runs in back-to-back games," she reported. The organization was established in 1903.
Additionally, the bullpen’s 5.57 ERA since August 1 is the third-worst in baseball during that span, via Sharp.
Several of New York's relievers are struggling. For example, Doval has a 6.59 ERA over 16 games with the team since it acquired him at the Trade Deadline, while Devin Williams has a 5.50 ERA across 59 outings. Additionally, Cruz has a 16.20 ERA over four games in September, and Leiter has a 5.32 ERA over 55 appearances.

New York general manager Brian Cashman beefed up the bullpen at the Trade Deadline by adding Doval and David Bednar, but that hasn't been enough. Although Bednar has a 2.70 ERA over 14 appearances with the team, he's one of its only relievers consistently pitching well.
Weaver had a 1.23 ERA in August, but blew his fourth save of the year on Sept. 3 and hasn't pitched a full inning in a game since. The right-hander also had a 7.15 ERA in July, a far cry from his 0.00 mark in April.
Hill has been the Yankees' most consistent reliever over the entire season, notching a 3.55 ERA in April, a 3.86 mark in May, a 0.71 mark in June, a 3.46 mark in July, and a 3.86 mark in August. However, they need the rest of the unit to follow his and Bednar's lead to avoid an early playoff exit.
New York is three games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the AL East and is tied with the Boston Red Sox for second. The Yankees and Red Sox also sit atop the AL wild card standings, each 2.5 games ahead of the Seattle Mariners, who are in the third and final spot.
