Aaron Boone was ejected again on Sunday afternoon, and while it was his first of the season, it’s also his 40th career ejection.
With that ejection, Boone moved into a tie with Casey Stengel and Terry Collins for 38th on the all-time MLB manager ejections list, according to Baseball Reference. He already holds the Yankees franchise record for managerial ejections, having passed Joe Girardi last year. Boone needed just seven seasons to notch 40; Girardi was tossed 34 times in ten years.
No other Yankees skipper is within ten of Boone’s total.
Boone is unlikely to catch Bobby Cox’s career mark of 162, but Boone’s ejection pace puts him within striking distance of the MLB top 20. Just 15 more, and he’d join a group that includes some of the sport’s most iconic bench bosses.
This ejection was one that Boone will be happy to wear. He was protecting Aaron Judge.

The Yankees manager was tossed in the eighth inning of their series finale against the Rays after sprinting out of the dugout to defend Judge, who had just struck out looking on a borderline pitch and began arguing with home plate umpire Adam Beck. It came after third base umpire Scott Barry had ruled what looked like a home run a foul ball.
Before Judge could say too much, Boone stepped in, jawed at Beck, and then turned his ire to Barry. He got his money’s worth before he was ejected.
Boone didn’t let the moment escalate on Sunday like it had on Friday night.
That was when home plate umpire John Bacon ejected Jazz Chisholm, Jr. after a called strike three. The second baseman made things worse by tweeting from the clubhouse during the game, using much more colorful language, that the call was wrong.
