Yankees Receive Ben Rice Update Amid Spring Training

The New York Yankees lineup will look much like it did in 2025, and that is far from a drawback given they led MLB in offense. With one emerging young bat expected to elevate his game, the unit could be even stronger this season.

That player is left‑handed slugger Ben Rice, who is expected to fully take over first base duties in 2026, with right‑handed veteran Paul Goldschmidt transitioning into more of a backup role.

Last year, Rice primarily operated in a platoon. The 26‑year‑old broke out during his first full season in the Bronx, posting a .255 batting average, .337 on‑base percentage, .836 OPS, 26 home runs and 65 RBIs across 138 games. By the time the postseason arrived, he was hitting in the middle of the Yankees lineup.

With his role set to expand this year, this spring training is a pivotal one for Rice as he prepares for a season where expectations are higher for both him and a Yankees team still searching for its first World Series title since 2009.

Unfortunately, Rice’s momentum came to a halt this past week. According to Greg Joyce of the New York Post, Rice has not been able to hit over the last few days due to sleeping on the wrong side of the bed and experiencing neck discomfort. The issue is not expected to be long term, and Rice hopes he may be able to hit as soon as today.

This matters because Rice is entering a season where every rep carries weight as he transitions into a full‑time everyday role for the first time in his career. His story makes this moment even more important.

He has spent his entire career with the Yankees after being selected in the 12th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, developing into one of the organization’s best success stories. He also brings versatility with his ability to catch when needed.

If he stays healthy and continues progressing, Rice has a chance to become a major long‑term piece in the Yankees lineup.
