After leaving two straight games early, Jazz Chisholm Jr. was out of the Yankees’ lineup altogether Thursday night in Kansas City. And while Aaron Boone said postgame that he’s hopeful Chisholm will be able to play Friday in Boston, he also acknowledged that trainers told him Chisholm was only available “in an emergency” for the series finale against the Royals.
Boone wouldn’t commit to Chisholm starting the opener at Fenway Park.
The Yankees had initially downplayed the severity of Chisholm’s latest injury—tightness in his left groin that forced him out after five innings on Wednesday. Boone said after that game that strength tests had “come back good” and sounded confident Chisholm had avoided anything serious.
Chisholm himself echoed that sentiment, telling The New York Post’s Greg Joyce that he believed exiting early Wednesday prevented something worse. He also said he could be available off the bench Thursday if needed.
That never happened.
Tuesday night, Chisholm also left early after tweaking his neck on a headfirst dive into third base. That play came moments after a brief but tense confrontation with Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia. Chisholm reportedly told third base coach Luis Rojas, in less-than-subtle terms, that he planned to slap Garcia. The two exchanged stares before Chisholm exited the next night.
Thursday marked another setback for a player who returned less than two weeks ago from a month-long absence due to an oblique injury. Through 38 games this season, Chisholm is batting .215 with nine home runs, 24 RBI, and a .770 OPS.
