The New York Yankees have had an incredible start to their season. They dominated and swept the Milwaukee Brewers in their three-game series to kick off the campaign. Now, they will look to stay hot against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
While the Yankees have had a great start to their season, there naturally are some questions still surrounding them because of their significant injury issues. Due to this, they have now added to their depth.
According to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch , the Yankees have announced that they have signed Dominic Smith to a minor-league contract.
Smith previously signed a minor-league contract with the Yankees for Spring Training. However, he opted out of the deal after he did not make the Yankees' Opening Day roster. Now, after not landing a major-league contract in free agency, Smith has signed this new minor-league deal with the Yankees.
Smith will now look to impress in hopes of getting called up to the Yankees' major league roster at some point this season. There are depth spots to fight for on the Yankees, so it will be intriguing to see if he can earn one from here.
Smith appeared in 93 games this past season with the Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds, posting six home runs, 34 RBIs, and a .233 batting average. In 693 career MLB games split between the New York Mets, Washington Nationals, Red Sox, and Reds, Smith has 64 home runs, 259 RBIs, and a .246 batting average.
Overall, there is no harm in the Yankees bringing back Smith on this minor-league deal. At a minimum, he will provide them with another experienced depth option.
