The New York Yankees are one of the few teams that can afford Tarik Skubal, but they don't really need to target starting pitching.
The Yankees have soon-to-be Cy Young Award winner Cam Schlittler, former Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón and Max Fried. They have internal options for that fifth spot, but there's no denying that adding Skubal would give them the best rotation in baseball.
At first glance, it would seem the Yankees are better off spending money to improve the infield, but ESPN's Kiley McDaniel recently reported that they are "thinking about" making a push for the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner.
McDaniel also noted that the Yankees would try to trade from their pitching "stockpile" if they were to land Skubal.
A rotation of Schlittler, Fried, Skubal, Rodón and Cole would be a nightmare for other teams and the only thing that could get in their way would seemingly be the injured list.
Paying Skubal would certainly limit the money the Yankees can spend on improving the offense, but at the same time, it would limit the importance of improving the offense. With that rotation in October, the offense would not really have to do as much to win games.
The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets were listed as the teams "believed to be at the front of the line for Skubal," but there are certainly some sleeper teams. The San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves need pitching as well and could become serious contenders. It seems like the Yankees are not to be counted out either.
