Yankees Unveil Star-Studded Old-Timers’ Day Roster

“Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Yankee Stadium.” – Bob Sheppard.

With the Yankees returning Old-Timers’ Day to the way it used to be (and really, always should be) it felt apropos to use Bob Sheppard’s classic stadium welcome. For the first time since 2019, the legendary Yankees of yesteryear are getting back to playing a brief baseball game on the annual day celebrating their contributions to the storied franchise.

After a couple of years where a Q&A was held instead of the game, it appeared the Yankees were going to turn to softball for their traditional day. The reactions to that decision were not kind to say the least and now, they are righting themselves, deciding to play a two-to-three inning baseball game, just as they always did before the 2020s came along.

The roster for Old-Timers’ Day has been released and it's a who's who of Yankees Royalty, with one notable exception (but we’ll get into that in a minute).

On Saturday, August 9th, the first-timers will be Roger Clemens, David Justice, Alfonso Soriano and José Vizcaíno. The returnees will include Mariano Rivera, Chris Chambliss, David Cone, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Bernie Williams, Ron Guidry and Joe Torre, just to name a few.

The event will also serve as a 25th anniversary celebration of the franchise’s 2000 World Series championship.

Now, getting to the notable exception. It’s been rumored for a few years that Derek Jeter refuses to attend if it means playing a baseball game. Well, Jeter is not coming. There is a report making the rounds that he can’t attend because it’s the birthday of his daughter, Bella. Well, her birthday is August 17th, not the 9th. So while it’s certainly possible his absence from Old-Timers’ Day is due to that, that alone will not stop the rumors from flying. Only time will tell if he’ll publicly address his reasoning for missing Old-Timers’ Day (which we wouldn’t bet on happening).

As it is, with the star-studded roster and the mini-baseball game back, fans are in for a treat.
