‘You wouldn’t say 0-3′: Brewers’ Pat Murphy left searching for answers amid unexpected NLCS situation

There’s no room for a loss anymore for Pat Murphy’s Milwaukee Brewers. After their 3-1 loss at Dodger Stadium on Thursday, the Brewers fell to a 3-0 hole in the National League Championship Series versus the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It would have likely been a much different — and favorable — story for Milwaukee through three games if it had managed to hit as well as it had in the regular season. But they are simply failing on that front.

Milwaukee has scored no more than a run in each of the first three games in the NLCS, during which they put up ugly slashes of .101/.165/.180.  The Brewers have recorded just 16 extra-base hits in the series as well. For a better picture of how paltry that is, the next fewest extra-base hits in the league championship round in this postseason by a team is 41 by the Dodgers.

The Dodgers are also having a tough time finding their offense in the series, but they are greatly suppressing Milwaukee’s bats as well. Los Angeles is even giving the Brewers a taste of their own medicine, with the Dodgers succeeding more in their small-ball approach.

“If you would have told me the Dodgers would score 10 runs in three games, what would be the score? … You wouldn’t say 0-3, Brewers manager Pat Murphy said, per Sonja Chen of MLB.com. “But we haven’t got the clutch hit. We’ve been a little bit foreign to how we’ve played in terms of contact.”

The Brewers will try again to get their offense going this Friday, with their season on the line in enemy territory.
