Despite starting the season with massive expectations, the Boston Red Sox made a terrible start to the 2026 campaign. Yet manager Alex Cora did not seem in any real danger of losing his job. So it was a massive shock to most Red Sox fans when owner John Henry decided to fire him from the role, along with several members of his coaching staff, on Saturday.
MLB analyst Jared Carrabis believes Boston Red Sox general manager Craig Breslow will follow Alex Cora out of the ball club if the team does not turn its fortunes around this season. With Cora and his crew out of the picture, there is no scapegoat for Breslow to blame for the team’s dismal performance.
“Everyone that got fired is either Alex Cora or an Alex Cora guy. That’s John Henry telling you, ‘Hey, Breslow, now everything is on you. So you better go out there and do something. because you can’t blame Alex Cora. You can’t blame the hierarchy or his philosophy anymore,” Carrabis told MLB Network.

“I don’t even think it’s the organization saying we have this vote of confidence in Craig Breslow. It’s the organization turning around and saying, ‘You’re up. There’s no shield to protect you. If you don’t turn this around, if you don’t fix this, you’re next.'”
The Red Sox ownership hired Breslow as their chief baseball officer in October 2023. He chose to offer a three-year, $21.75 million contract extension to Cora in July 2024, through to the end of the 2027 season.
Jared Carrabis admitted he was completely shocked to learn the decision from the Boston Red Sox to fire Alex Cora. The Red Sox also removed former captain Jason Varitek from his role as the game-planning coordinator. Carrabis believed both Cora and Varitek would remain tied to the organization for the rest of their coaching careers.
“I’ve never seen anything like this. I’ve never seen an entire coaching staff wiped out in one swoop in-season. When was the last time you saw a manager fired in April? Especially one that is so beloved, won a championship, and has all the tenure,” Carrabis said.
“I thought he was an organization lifter. Same thing with Varitek. The man who dedicated his entire professional career to this organization.”
Cora became the Boston Red Sox manager in 2018, leading the team to the World Series title in his first season. He vacated his role in 2020 to serve his suspension for his involvement in the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. The 50-year-old returned for a second stint as the Red Sox manager the following year.
