UFC 328 had everything to be one of the best events of the year until the main event. Defending middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev took on former teammate Sean Strickland in a duel with a lot of history.
After a terrific fight between Joshua Van and Tatsuro Taira for the flyweight title, Chimaev and Strickland took the octagon.
The American fighter defeated Chimaev via split decision. Strickland won two scorecards 48-47, while Chimaev took the other scorecard at 48-47 at the Prudential Center.
The result was a shocker for many people who thought Chimaev had done just enough to retain the title. Instead, Strickland regained it amid controversy.
NEXTA reported on Sunday that two men died by suicide after putting a lot of money on Chimaev’s win against Sean Strickland.
“They had taken out loans, sold their cars and their wives’ jewelry, and then bet everything on Khamzat Chimaev to win,” they wrote.
Many started calling for a rematch shortly after the fight. Chimaev had a different game plan in this fight, which could have made him vulnerable against Strickland. He was heavily favored to win, but the judges didn’t see him as the winner.
