Amanda Nunes is officially back in the UFC’s anti-doping program, signalling a likely return to action after announcing her retirement in 2023.
The former two-division champion was tested within the past week, as confirmed by the UFC’s anti-doping database. Under current rules, retired fighters must undergo six months of testing before they’re cleared to compete again, placing Nunes’ comeback window around December 2025 or early 2026, unless an exemption is granted.
The move follows her appearance at UFC 303, where Nunes faced off with current bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison inside the Octagon. Harrison had just defeated Julianna Peña to win the belt Nunes vacated. Nunes last fought in 2023, dominating Irene Aldana in her final title defense before hanging up the gloves.
Nunes’ only loss in a 15-fight run came against Peña in 2021—a result she later avenged. With Harrison now holding her old title, Nunes’ comeback appears aimed at settling unfinished business. Harrison is desperate to secure the fight, stating she would even want the six-month testing to be set aside with an exception.
“Obviously, Amanda’s next. We spoke to her at the Hall of Fame yesterday. She says Q4. But she’s not in the drug testing pool yet, so she might not be able to fight till Q1 of next year. I’m sure they’re talking to Ali and letting him know about everything. That’s why I pay him the big bucks—so I don’t have to think about stuff like that. I just show up, train, work hard, stay ready. Send a location, I’ll be ready,” Harrison said
“But if she’s just getting back in the pool, it takes at least six months. Does that still…I mean, I said that I would waive that for a small fee,” Harrison stated
“I just want to fight again. I decided to come back for something that I really enjoy to be in. Honestly, that’s why I left for two years because I don’t want to be burned out. I got the rest that I need and everything. Why not come back? I’m not impressed. I think she did what she’s supposed to do. She saw she could beat Julianna, she saw the arm, and then she got the arm, and she beat Julianna. So I’m happy for her,” Nunes stated
