Sean Brady says his first professional loss sent him into a tailspin that required professional mental health support.
The welterweight contender told Daniel Cormier on a recent interview that he broke down crying at random moments following his 2022 upset defeat to Belal Muhammad at UFC 280, per Sherdog. Brady had entered that fight undefeated through five UFC victories before Muhammad stopped him with punches late in the second round.
Brady admitted his entire sense of self had been wrapped up in staying unbeaten. "I thought I was going to retire undefeated," he said, per the Sherdog report. "My whole identity was wrapped up in being undefeated. When I lost to Belal, it devastated me. I would be randomly driving and I would just start crying."
The Philadelphia native hired a mental coach to work through the aftermath. He maintains he would win a rematch nine times out of ten and wants the chance to prove it, though Muhammad lost the title to Leon Edwards earlier this year.
Brady has gone 3-1 since the Muhammad loss, with wins over Kelvin Gastelum, Gilbert Burns and Edwards before Michael Morales stopped him last November. He bounced back with a decision over Joaquin Buckley in May and faces Gabriel Bonfim in the main event of a UFC Fight Night card on Nov. 7 at the Apex in Las Vegas.
