There’s been some buzz recently about the possibility of Cain Velasquez making a comeback, though nothing concrete has been confirmed.
Velasquez hasn’t stepped into the octagon since 2019, when he faced off against Francis Ngannou in what would be his last appearance for the UFC.
The fight ended quickly after Ngannou landed an uppercut as Velasquez was dropping levels, possibly preparing to shoot for a takedown.
Since then, Velasquez has spent time away from the sport, including a stint in prison where he served 11 months of a five-year sentence.
Velasquez was released from prison in February and has since returned to the public eye. While he hasn’t competed in years, the 43-year-old has stayed involved in the sport by training fighters at American Kickboxing Academy.
Even though he’s well past his prime, there’s still a place in the sport for veterans, especially outside of the UFC. Earlier this month, MVP MMA held its first event, where Velasquez worked as part of the broadcast team.
The card also featured former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, who was making his 32nd appearance. That might be enough to convince Velasquez there’s still a path back.
He isn’t closing the door on a return but said it would take a significant financial offer to bring him back into competition.
“I have no wish list as far as person, but if the money was right then the money is right,” Velasquez told WeighingIn. “But it has to be really good. It has to be really damn good for me to (return).”
MVP MMA could certainly use more big names after Ronda Rousey headlined their debut event with Gina Carano. Rousey’s reported payout topped $2 million, making it one of the most lucrative deals in women’s MMA history.
With their next event likely to air on Netflix again, Velasquez could find himself getting a call from MVP MMA sooner rather than later.
